Set in high-altitude shola grasslands near Munnar, it offers stunning views and rich biodiversity.

Neelakurinji National Park, also known as Kurinjimala Sanctuary, is a unique and ecologically significant protected area located in the Idukki district of Kerala, near Munnar. Spanning approximately 32 square kilometers, the park was established primarily to conserve the rare and endangered Neelakurinji flower (Strobilanthes kunthiana), which famously blooms just once every 12 years, covering the hills in a breathtaking blanket of bluish-purple.
Set in the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the park features high-altitude shola grasslands and evergreen forests, making it a biodiversity hotspot. It provides habitat for a wide range of endemic flora and fauna, including elephants, Nilgiri tahr, gaur, leopards, and many species of butterflies and birds.
The cool climate, rolling hills, and panoramic views make it a favored destination for eco-tourists and trekkers. When the Neelakurinji blooms, usually between August and October, the entire region transforms into a surreal floral landscape, attracting thousands of visitors from around the world.
During off-bloom years, the park still remains a peaceful escape, offering serene treks, birdwatching, and stunning natural beauty. The sanctuary also holds cultural significance for local tribes and is a vital ecological buffer for the Munnar region.
Access is typically regulated during the blooming season to preserve the fragile ecosystem. Whether visited during the flowering spectacle or otherwise, Neelakurinji National Park stands as a symbol of Kerala’s rich natural heritage and the awe-inspiring rhythms of nature.
